Well you can probably guess why we're called Dirty Apron BBQ. Don't worry, I don't use this apron when making your rubs and sauces. And yes it has been washed, but BBQ is a dirty business, and this represents almost 20 years of grilling and smoking.
It's hard to say when Dirty Apron really started. Like a lot of people I've always liked cooking, and grilling in particular held a fascination for me. Maybe it started on camping trips or road trips with my father where we stopped at BBQ joints with some frequency. Maybe it started in college when I began making BBQ sauces in my dorm room. I know the first time the name was officially used though, 2012. That's when some friends of mine got married and I was asked to make some of my dry rubs as wedding favors. We made up some labels and from then on I joked about my fictional BBQ company.
I kept on grilling and added smoking to my repertoire, I kept tweaking my recipes and experimenting with new things. I read books and articles and of course I kept eating BBQ too. I went to competitions I got certified as a BBQ judge, catered a weddings and parties and when people asked me if I sold my sauces and rubs I always said no, but maybe someday I would.
Eventually I got tired of people asking and with support from my wife, son and some very good friends I made Dirty Apron BBQ official. I'm not good at marketing, or in front of a camera, I'm bad at self promotion and social media. I'm learning about editing videos, I'm not good at that either. I do love BBQ though and I am pretty good at that. I hope you give Dirty Apron a try, and I hope you like it.
